Capacity Matching Based Model for Protected Left Turn Phases Design of Adjacent Signalized Intersections along Arterial Roads

چکیده
A protected left turn phase is often used at intersections with heavy left turns. This may induce a capacity gap between adjacent intersections along the arterial road among which only parts of intersection are with protected left turn phase. A model for integrated optimization of protected left turn phases for adjacent intersections along the arterial road is developed to solve this problem. Two objectives are considered: capacity gap minimization and capacity maximization. The problems are formulated as Binary-IntegerLinear-Programs, which are solvable by standard branchand-bound routine. A set of constraints have been set up to ensure the feasibility of the resulting optimal left turn phase type and signal settings. A field intersections group of the Wei-er Road of Ji’nan city is used to test the proposed model. The results show that the method can decrease the capacity gap between adjacent intersections, reduce the delay as well as increase the capacity in comparison with the field signal plan and signal plan optimized by Synchro. The sensitivity analysis has further demonstrated the potential of the proposed approach to be applied in coordinated design of left turn phases between adjacent intersections along the arterial road under different traffic demand patterns.

Developing an Analytical Model and Simulation of The Contraflow Left-Turn Lane at Signalized Intersections
At some intersections, excessive queue lengths may spill out of the left-turn bay and block the through lanes, jeopardizing level of service for the entire intersection. One of the most effective plans recently presented by the researchers is the "Contraflow left-turn lane" (CLL) In this method, left-turn vehicles will use the nearest lane in the opposite direction in addition to the usual left...

ITE JOURNAL / JUNE 2000 ARTERIAL CAPACITY PROBLEMS The function of an arterial is efficient movement of large traffic volumes over a significant distance.1 As arterial traffic volumes approach roadway capacity, delays grow rapidly at signalized intersections with significant cross-street volumes, diminishing the ability of the arterials to help traffic move effectively. Under conventional arter...

arterial corridor greatly impacted by strip commercial development. The data-gathering efforts consisted of extensive traffic counts and travel-time and delay studies. This enabled us to see firsthand the great congestion that was occurring on the street. At the four most-congested intersections, unequal queuing between the two through traffic lanes was observed. In all cases, the right lane’s ...

Left-turn crashes occur frequently at signalized intersections and often lead to severe injuries. This problem can be addressed through the implementation of protected left-turn signals. This gives left-turning vehicles the right to enter the intersection free from conflict with opposing drivers and pedestrians. The present study analyses the effect of this measure on crash occurrence. The stud...
